All nine episodes from the 2007 debut season of Pushing Daisies are jam-packed with bittersweet charm, quirky off-kilter magic, and delicious pie. Like a fairy-tale come to life, this candy-colored primetime ABC hit may be the oddest mystery series TV has ever witnessed. Piemaker Ned (the captivating Lee Pace) has a rather strange gift: namely, he can bring the dead back to life with a touch, a nifty little trick that turns out to be tremendously useful when one is trying to solve murders (you can ask victims who actually offed them), which is what Ned's private investigator partner Emerson (Chi McBride) does. Alas, the life of the resurrected is brief: you see, Ned's second touch is absolutely fatal, and must be delivered before one minute has elapsed or someone else in the vicinity will take an eternal dirt nap in their place. Which wouldn't be a particularly big deal if Ned had not resurrected the love of his life, Chuck (Anna Friel), but now can never touch her again. Delightfully weird and absolutely enchanting, this is a chipper slice-of-death series that manages to be both life-affirming and entirely addictive. DVD extras include a series of episode-specific “making-of” mini-featurettes. Highly recommended. (M. Johanson)
