Beyond nostalgic value for those who grew up with this series, there's little magic in Sabrina's seventh and final season, in which Melissa Joan Hart's title character is now an adult (exit the sorely missed Caroline Rhea and Beth Broderick as her aunts and mentors). Sabrina lives in a house with airhead Morgan (Elisa Donovan) and wisecracking Roxie (Soleil Moon Frye), where mild profanities and sexual references make things a little less family-friendly than in earlier years. The initial episodes follow Sabrina as she lands her first job as a writer at indie music magazine Scorch, where she meets Aaron (Dylan Neal); the second half of the season focuses on her romance with Aaron, leading to an engagement and wedding plans (don't worry Team Harvey: Sabrina's soul mate, played by Nate Richert, remains a contender, encouraged by Salem the cat, voiced by Nick Bakay). Unfortunately, the comedy-challenged cast members fail to conjure up much laughter, although to be fair, they're not given much to work with. In some episodes, Sabrina still uses her powers like Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, showing flawed characters—such as an arrogant rock star—the error of their ways. Several episodes seem edited (an Internet check confirms that performances by the Goo Goo Dolls, Avril Lavigne, and Sixpence None the Richer have been replaced with other songs). Compiling all 21 episodes from 2002–03 last season, DVD extras include the TV movie Sabrina Goes to Rome. Not recommended. (D. Liebenson)
