Part of the Blood—The Last Vampire horror-action franchise, Blood-C revolves around Saya, the dutiful daughter of a widowed shrine priest. Saya might seem like an innocent, slightly scatterbrained, small-town Japanese schoolgirl; but she also regularly goes forth as a supernatural sword-warrior, dueling against exceptionally grotesque (even by Japanimation standards) monsters who are devouring members of the community. When the horrific entities begin speaking to Saya about their “covenant” and other puzzling matters, the heroine slowly begins to realize that the village and her role as a monster-slayer are not what she thought they were. Created by the famed all-female Japanese animation collective CLAMP, Blood-C doesn't stint on the hideous violence and dismemberment and also features nudity. Compiling all 12 episodes that originally aired in 2011 on a dual-language set, rated TV-MA, extras include episode commentaries. Given the franchise recognition, this bloody series is recommended.
