The latest addition to the Fox Sunday night “Animation Domination” block is another family-centered sitcom, this one about a burger joint run by the titular Bob (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) and his wife, Linda (John Roberts), along with their three decidedly unhelpful offspring. Eldest child Tina (Dan Mintz) is a nerdy, introverted, antisocial misfit; son Gene (Eugene Mirman) is an overexcited boy with a keyboard, a megaphone, and a passion for performance; and unrestrained younger daughter Louise (Kristen Schaal) wears bunny ears while she brainstorms her latest prank—such as telling her grade-school classroom that Bob's burgers are made from human remains. What makes this different from other Fox animated sitcoms is that Dad is the normal, centered character here—a working man and devoted, affectionate husband just trying to keep his struggling business afloat and manage his kids' crises with fumbling sincerity. Created by Loren Bouchard, the show revisits well-trod storylines—first love, annoying relatives, peer pressure, social rivalry—with a genial affection for the characters and a playful sense of humor. Compiling all 13 episodes from the 2011 first season, extras include episode commentaries, audio outtakes, a music video, and Bouchard's original series demo. A strong optional purchase. (S. Axmaker)
