Launching in 1993 as part of the ABC network's "TGIF" family viewing lineup, Boy Meets World outwardly looked like just another sitcom with a spunky kid protagonist, nice parents, wacky siblings and friends, and an adversary-mentor on the staff at school. But after watching the initial few of the 22 episodes compiled in this first-season set, what becomes evident are the show's unusual grace and wit, stylish but not ornate dialogue, and emotionally resonant themes about a boy's first encounters with loyalty, ethics, and empathy for others. The fine cast includes Ben Savage (The Wonder Years' Fred's younger brother) as 11-year-old Cory Matthews, underappreciated actor William Russ as Cory's dad, Rider Strong as the best friend and, most importantly, William Daniels in a tailor-made performance as Cory's firm but compassionate teacher. Presented in a serviceable if unremarkable DVD transfer, the special features on this three-disc boxed set include four audio commentaries by cast and crew, as well as a bonus episode from the fourth season. Recommended. (T. Keogh)
