The 12-episode 2007 series Shigurui boasts the dubious honor of being one of the most graphically violent and disturbing anime productions ever made. Set in feudal Japan, the story revolves around two rival samurai, Irako and Fujuki, both in training at a dojo run by the sadistically deranged sensei Kogan Iwamoto. Kogan pits the pair against one another in combat, with the prize being the hand of the old man's daughter, Mie. But Mie is crushed when Irako is victorious, as she secretly loves Fujuki (and her married life is off to a horrid start after her father orders the newlyweds to make love in front of the dojo members—some of whom pin Mie to the ground). Later, Irako's infidelity with Kogan's mistress Iku will spark a savage response from the sensei that sends the story in a gruesome cycle of punishment and revenge. While Shigurui features visually stunning animation (especially in the Blu-ray version), the narrative's moral depravity—heavy on cruel, brutal, and often misogynistic actions that leave victims blinded, disfigured, and emotionally damaged—makes for extremely uncomfortable and ultimately unrewarding viewing. Although suggested for 17-up, the high level of sadism running throughout this dual-language series will likely be shocking even to adults. DVD/Blu-ray extras include audio commentaries, production artwork, and a 24-page booklet with interviews, background information, and the full storyline. Not a necessary purchase. Aud: P. (P. Hall)
