Based on a remarkable true story, this stirring drama, originally broadcast on the Disney Channel, won an Emmy Award and a Humanitas Prize. In 1977, an African-American Congressman who took the lead in raising awareness in this country about apartheid opened his door to a South African exchange student. It will be a chance, his enthusiastic 13-year-old daughter (Shadia Simmons) tells him, "to enrich our lives and forge a kinship and bond between our black African brothers and sisters." Imagine their surprise when a white South African girl (Lindsey Haun), the daughter of a policeman charged with enforcing the law of apartheid, appears on their doorstep. It is inevitable that the two girls will become friends and forge an understanding, but this movie does not sugarcoat apartheid's hurtful and devastating legacy. Highly recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
