Working late one night, police crime technologist and all-around nice guy Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp) is literally struck by lighting that also hits a batch of chemicals. Upon awakening, Allen discovers that the strange mixture has given him the power of super-speed, after which—conveniently for the plot—his policeman brother is murdered, and Allen vows to use his newfound abilities (including re-arranging his molecules to pass through walls) to fight crime and injustice as The Flash. A dark, gritty, short-lived (1990-91) series based on the popular comic book, The Flash is often visually stunning with dazzling special effects; unfortunately, the scripts tend to be filled with shallow characters and predictable dialogue. Featuring guest appearances by Mark Hamill as The Trickster and David Cassidy as Mirror Master, The Flash—which has developed a strong cult following, especially among comic book fans—is presented here in a disappointingly extra-less 22-episode set. Libraries with strong graphic novel collections may want to consider, but this is strictly optional elsewhere. (C. Birkmeyer)
