The most popular "Supermarionation" series produced by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson—and arguably their greatest—this sci-fi kids' show about a private rescue organization with a fleet of futuristic vehicles serves up an inspired mix of Japanese monster movie mayhem, British stiff-upper-lip cool, and American exceptionalism. Performed entirely with sophisticated marionette puppets and detailed miniature props, Thunderbirds centers on a team of bland brothers who pilot high-tech toys including an orbiting space station, jets, submersibles, and spaceflight vehicles, while rescuing civilians from natural disasters and mechanical failures. Providing support is Lady Penelope, a classy London agent who is smart, courageous, and elegant. But there is also a Cold War dimension to the show, which features a vaguely East-Asian villain named The Hood (suitable for a bad James Bond knockoff), who perform acts of sabotage. The characters are really only the support staff for the true stars here: the magnificently designed vehicles—lovingly detailed miniatures that roll out for each mission. As a side note, this series was the primary inspiration for Trey Parker's parody Team America. Compiling all 32 episodes from 1965-66, extras include a behind-the-scenes documentary. Recommended. (S.
