America fighting for and winning its independence from Britain spawned various films that would be useful educational settings. They can be a valuable tool to teach students about the Revolutionary War. By showing a film that depicts the events of the war, teachers can give students a visual understanding of the people, places, and events involved in the conflict.
Films can also spark discussions and debates among students, encouraging them to think critically about the causes and consequences of the war. Using films in the classroom can be an engaging and effective way for students to learn about the Revolutionary War. If you are an educator, consider asking your academic librarian to access these titles for public screenings in your classroom.
Be sure to consult our guide to teaching historical fiction before incorporating these films in an academic setting.
1776 (1972)
Before Lin-Manuel Miranda and Hamilton, there was 1776. A musical about the American struggle during the Revolution, this film (like most historical films) isn’t totally historically accurate. But it’s still fun to watch, with William Daniels (Mr. Feeny!) as John Adams, Blythe Danner as Martha Jefferson, and David Ford as John Hancock.

The Patriot (2000)
Mel Gibson plays pacifist farmer Benjamin Martin, a veteran of The French and Indian War. His son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) enlisted to fight against the British in 1778. Most of the film hinges on the bitter rivalry between Martin and British Colonel William Tavington (Jason Isaacs), culminating in a violent outcome at the Battle of Cowpens. The history is… well it’s not totally accurate, but this one’s still worth a watch.

John Adams (2008)
This HBO miniseries stars Paul Giamatti as the pivotal Founding Father. Divided into several parts starting with The Boston Massacre in 1770 and leading into his presidency, this one is a useful educational tool as instructors can pick which episodes to use according to their lesson plans. Laura Linney, Tom Wilkinson, Sarah Polley, Rufus Sewell, and David Morse also co-star in this extensive tribute to the Founding Father and President.

Turn: Washington’s Spies (2014)
Covering the period between 1776 and 1781, this four-season show explores the Culper Spy Ring. These spies helped turn the tide during the American Revolution through their clandestine work. Again, like many other films and shows, there is a lot of creative licenses taken with historical accuracy. But this one is still worth a look.
