To read some of his notices, you might think that Brian Regan is the best thing to happen to standup comedy since Robin Williams, or maybe Richard Pryor (of course, some of Dane Cook's early notices said the same thing). In this all new, one-man show that debuted on Comedy Central in September 2008, Regan—a very physical performer—serves up some sparkling jokes in an otherwise uneven outing in which his delivery is occasionally too self-aware. In The Epitome of Hyperbole, Regan takes on TV psychics, enumerates and explains the stupidest crimes ever committed, and offers very personal suggestions on how operas might be improved. Regan is not an untalented comic, but he seems more like a work in progress—showing great promise, but not quite there yet. DVD extras include a brief encore and a behind-the-scenes featurette. A strong optional purchase. Aud: P. (E. Hulse)
