Following the trend of the last several seasons, the sixth season of Adventure Time begins where season 5 left off. Finn the Human (Jeremy Shada) and Jake the Dog (John DiMaggio) pursue the Lich (Ron Perlman) to the interdimensional prison known as The Citadel hoping to find and reconnect with Finn’s long-lost human father, Martin (Stephen Root). After foiling the Lich’s hastily formed plan, the duo returns home with Martin choosing another path off The Citadel.
The season continues down a winding path, often focusing on characters beyond Finn and Jake such as Ice King (Tom Kenny) and his ‘wizard bros’ going on a road trip, Lumpy Space Princess (Pendelton Ward) forcing Ice King to read her fanfiction, and another appearance by the future being Cuber (Emo Philips) and his ‘grables’. There are also several episodes with guest or experimental animation aimed at a younger audience including ‘Water Park Prank’ and ‘Food Chain’.
Season 6 of Adventure Time returns to its roots a bit, preferring one-off plots to lengthy extended plotlines. Many extended plots exist and several episodes are devoted to exploring them, but most of this season focuses on silly or simple plots and character development. Younger fans of the series will thoroughly enjoy this season and its childish antics. Older fans will enjoy the exploration of who family is and what family means as Jake visits his now-grown children, Finn finds his father, and BMO (Niki Yang) upgrades into a grown-up.
The episode "Food Chain" would be an excellent resource for basic biology lessons, providing a stimulating and catchy introduction to the life cycle for 1st through 5th-grade students. Those looking to expand their children’s section with crowd-pleasing content should look to Adventure Time. The sixth season is an excellent choice for a wide range of age and interest groups. Highly Recommended.
