Colm is a young boy with an extensive imagination. In school he draws a picture of his mother, but on the way home he encounters four animated creatures who all suggest changes for the picture. The rabbit feels the ears are too short, the crocodile tells Colm to make the mouth larger, the elephant complains about the nose, and the giraffe counsels the boy to stretch the neck a bit. Eager to please, Colm makes all the requested adjustments, and ends up with a picture of his mother that looks more like Darth Vader (without his helmet). Yet, when he arrives home, his mother is delighted with the picture--accepting it just as it is. And Colm receives some bread and honey for his labors. This is a pleasant Irish short that would be a good discussion starter for elementary school children. As such, it is recommended for elementary school libraries.
