You've got to like Brittany: an avid reader, eager student, and exceptionally well-behaved and courteous young girl, she is a living embodiment of the ideal child. In this iconographic presentation, Brittany falls asleep while her father reads a story about Harriet Tubman, the legendary 19th-century "conductor" of the Underground Railroad which brought slaves north to freedom. Asleep, Brittany dreams that she accompanies Tubman on one of her heroic missions. On the technical side, the picture dissolves and so-so voiceover (the speakers sound as if they're reading) make this a less than compelling children's title, and Nest's Animated Hero Classics: Harriet Tubman (VL-1/97) is definitely a better overview of Tubman's life and times. Still, you've got to like Brittany, an African-American girl whose admirable traits make her an inspiration to kids, regardless of race. An optional purchase. Aud: K, E, P. (R. Pitman)
