Based on the 2007 picture book written and illustrated by Laurie Keller (The Scrambled States of America [VL Online-11/07] and Arnie the Doughnut [VL-11/05]), Do Unto Otters—subtitled “A Book About Manners”—finds Mr. Owl instructing Mr. Rabbit on the proper ways to act with his new neighbors, the Otters. After the reluctant hare is reminded that it is always wise to follow the Golden Rule (“Do unto otters as you would have otters do unto you”), the pair talk about positive interpersonal habits, including being friendly (“good eye contact”), polite (say “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me”), honest (no lying or cheating), considerate, kind, cooperative, fair, apologetic, and forgiving (and don't forget to share). Each trait is briefly illustrated through imaginative short animated sketches featuring Mr. Rabbit, the Otters, and other members of the animal kingdom. Using a spoonful of whimsical cartoon sugar to help the behavioral medicine go down, this is both fun and instructive. DVD extras include an interview with the author, and a read-along option.
