Filmmaker Ed Counts' hand-drawn animated short is based on a contemporary Appalachian folk tale about a young boy named Joey who imagines that he can fly as he runs up and down the backwoods hills. Eventually Joey does fly and teaches his little sister to do the same. After Joey grows up, he takes his daughter Annie on a walk in the mountains one evening, and unfortunately runs into a bear. Were Joey's memories of his childhood flying experiences just the product of an overactive imagination? Or will "flying" save Joey now? A fine paean to the importance of imagination, Joey Learns to Fly is a good short for both children and adults. Recommended.
