Based on the bestselling children's book by Roald Dahl, this delightful tale of the friendship between a young orphan named Sophie and a 24-foot giant is a real winner, both visually and narratively speaking. Goosebumps fans will love the creepy plot which pits Sophie and the B.F.G. against an ugly army of bone-crunching bad giants that take particular delight in munching on small children. The British accents here are sometimes a bit thick, but Dahl's sparkling imagination and wit more than offset this minor obstacle. (R. Pitman)[DVD Review—Aug. 22, 2006—A&E, 88 min., not rated, $19.95—Making its first appearance on DVD, 1989's The BFG sports a mediocre transfer, with limited DVD extras including a text chronology of author Roald Dahl, as well as a selected bibliography. Bottom line: a disappointing extras package for a solid film.]
