Winner of the 1999 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Video Award, this exquisitely clay-animated re-creation of the 'first Christmas', ably narrated by Christopher Plummer and backed by traditional carols, brings the Nativity tableau to sparkling, vibrant life. We see Joseph meticulously laboring to build a saddle for his betrothed's comfort on the long ride into Bethlehem, the wise men following the brightly burning celestial star, and the shepherds visited by an angel of the Lord. All converge in the stable to herald the birth of the Christ child, shown nestling in Mary's arms. Although the beginning seemed a bit long and the ending rather abrupt, The First Christmas is, for the most part, a glorious triumph. I have seen no better captured or wider range of human emotions expressed in the medium of clay before. Even though the title includes the word "Christmas" this beautiful film should be seen by audiences year round. Highly recommended. Aud: K, E, P. (R. Pitman)
