So, what would happen if Kansas and Hawaii suddenly decided to switch places on the map? Well, Hawaii would likely tire of "hoedowns" very quickly, while Kansas might become "lonesome and seasick." Based on the 1998 picture book written and illustrated by Laurie Keller, The Scrambled States of America is an imaginative tall tale in which narrator "Sam" (Jon Carroll) tells viewers a "little story" about the time when the states decided that the grass might be a little greener on the other side of the boundary lines and swapped spots (Nevada and Mississippi fell in love during the process, but that's a subplot). Once the states finished rearranging themselves, of course, trouble began brewing right away (as in Alaska not appreciating Oklahoma's handle sticking into its side) leading to an inevitable reversion. Nicely animated, and boasting the voice talents of a wide range of Weston Woods regulars (as well as Chevy Chase), this is a clever little title that will naturally appeal to children's mischievous appreciation of situations where the laws of physics are blithely overturned. Recommended. Aud: K, E, P. (R. Pitman)
