Nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, this charming tale of a boy monk in medieval Ireland centers on curious Brendan (voiced by Evan McGuire), an orphaned novice at the Abbey of Kells, who loves assisting the brothers as they illustrate the gospels, although his stern uncle, the Abbot Cellach (Brendan Gleeson), wishes Brendan would instead help with erecting a giant wall to ward off marauding Vikings. A turning point comes when the renowned Scottish calligrapher Brother Aiden (Mick Lally) and his cat, Pangur Ban (Venise du Bois du Roy), arrive at the abbey after fleeing from a besieged monastery. Aiden carries an unfinished manuscript that supposedly can turn darkness into light, and he enlists Brendan's help to complete the undertaking. Brendan sneaks into the woods with Pangur to find berries to make green ink for the illustrations--a dangerous quest since the forest is believed to be filled with demons. But enchantment reigns as the lad is befriended by the fairy Aisling (Christen Mooney), and he eventually learns that having the courage and imagination to follow one's dreams is the best fortification against evil. Created for $8 million and inspired by the ornate designs of the actual Book of Kells (the stunning illuminated volumes displayed at Trinity College in Dublin), this first-time feature from directors Tomm Moore and Nora Twomey uses hand-drawn, highly stylized 2-D animation to deftly meld history, mythology, and faith. Highly recommended. [Note: DVD/Blu-ray extras include audio commentary (by director Tomm Moore, co-director Nora Twomey, and art director Ross Stewart), a “Director's Presentation” featurette (27 min.), “Voices of Ireland” recording sessions with voice cast members Brendan Gleeson, Evan McGuire, Christen Mooney, and Mick Lally (11 min.), a “Pencil to Picture” animation featurette (9 min.), an “Aisling at the Oscars” brief animation segment featuring the character, and an early concept trailer with commentary. Exclusive to the Blu-ray release is a bonus DVD copy of the film, and a 24-page prequel graphic novel. Bottom line: a fine extras package for this Oscar nominee.] (S. Granger)
