Yo! Yes? is a laconic presentation of a chance meeting between two lonely boys on a city street--boys who tentatively build a bridge toward budding friendship using monosyllabic call and response--that seems (to an adult reviewer) slow, obvious, and rather simple. The question, of course, is whether it would come across that way to a lonely kindergartner who's afraid to make friends. Based on Chris Raschka's 1993 Caldecott Honor picture book, and animated by the legendary Michael Sporn, with catchy music from Jerry Dale McFadden, this short (long to older viewers), very nicely made, but decidedly one-note effort should be considered an optional purchase where appropriate. Aud: K, E, P. (R. Pitman)
