Originally aired as an ABC Weekend Special, this excellent short film for young adults examines the role of gender in our social attitudes. 12-year-old Christi Bay is ecstatic when she discovers that auditions are going to be held for a local production of the musical Oliver. A bonus for Christi is the presence of Phil Gray, a renowned actor who will be directing the play. There's only one catch--Christi learns that the audition is "for boys only." With the help of her schoolmate Lizbeth, Christi changes her looks enough to pass for a boy, and fools everyone. Not only does Christi land a role as part of the orphans' chorus, she also gets invited by the boys to participate in "boy" activities, like video game playing and arm wrestling. In time, Christi comes to realize that boys aren't really as yucky as they're made out to be. She also begins to feel guilty about her charade. The day before the show, Christi comes clean--assuming that she'll be kicked out. The bridge that's built between these junior battle of the sexers makes for a satisfying and instructive resolution. Highly recommended for those libraries who can afford it. (Available from: New Dimensions Media, 85803 Lorane Hwy, Eugene, OR 97405.)
