Stars: Sally Kirkland (JFK, Anna, Primary Motive), James Brolin (The Amityville Horror; Gas, Food, Lodging), Kris Kristofferson (A Star is Born, Trouble in Mind). Originally titled Paper Hearts during its brief theatrical run, writer-director Rod McCall's saga of a dysfunctional C&W family challenges last year's Hard Promises for the title of stupidest movie in a 10-gallon hat. Sally Kirkland plays Jenny Stevenson, an abandoned woman, who along with her estranged husband Henry (James Brolin) makes as good a case as can be made for the wisdom of mandatory sterilization. Over a three day period that feels as if it were shot in real time, Jenny and Henry meet at their youngest daughter's wedding, and then proceed to have regular clashes about once every 15 minutes. For variety, the oldest daughter Samantha (Pamela Gidley), a Big Apple music school student, plays footsies with an earnest puppy of a farmhand. What's so disappointing about this film is that it waltzes out under the guise of being a feminist take on the broken heart theme, but the astute viewer (i.e., any female watching) will quickly recognize that this is a macho jerk movie from the get. What powers this moronic film is that Jenny just can't quite face up to the fact that Henry's no damn good, even after she catches him in the sack with his new girlfriend (a nubile nymph who is half Henry's age and financially well-off to boot...right, and the moon's made of cheese, and the Seahawks are going to win the Super Bowl next year). Henry's a lying, three-timing, drunken, selfish, dumb, and unforgivably bland character, so it stands to reason that every woman he sees will melt, right? We don't think so. Audience: People who liked Hard Promises.
