Save this newsletter. This may be the only favorable review of this film you will ever encounter in print. Penelope Spheeris first caught our attention with the bizarre film on punk culture Suburbia. In Dudes, she's stretched genre's a bit to make a punk western. Jon Cryer (Grant) and Daniel Roebuck (Biscuit) are the two "dudes" that stalk a couple of vicious rednecks who have killed their friend, Milo. Dudes may be short on story, but it has enough style to fuel a half dozen films. Much more style than, say, (stand by, heretic observation coming up) Easy Rider, which it loosely resembles. Dudes is not for every taste. (It's not even for most tastes.) But if you think that today's youth are fully accounted for in John Hughes' movies, check out Dudes. (R. Pitman)[Blu-ray/DVD Combo Review—Oct. 17, 2016—Shout! Factory, 90 min., R, Blu-ray/DVD Combo: $29.95—Making its Blu-ray debut, 1987's Dudes features a solid transfer and a DTS-HD 2.0 soundtrack. Extras include interviews by director Penelope Spheeris with costars Jon Cryer (32 min.), Flea (26 min.), and Daniel Roebuck (25 min.), as well as interviews with writer J. Randall Jahnson and producer Miguel Tejada-Flores (14 min.) and costar Catherine Mary Stewart (13 min.), plus a vintage “making-of” featurette (7 min.), and a photo gallery. Bottom line: this offbeat punk Western makes a very welcome debut on Blu-ray.]
