Director Nicholas Roeg's (The Man Who Fell to Earth) allegorical study of the nature of greed and power stars Gene Hackman as an obsessed miner who strikes gold and instantly becomes the richest man alive. When he loses his daughter (Theresa Russell) to a fortune-hunting playboy (Rutger Hauer), his all-powerful world begins to collapse. Visually interesting, the storyline is nevertheless murky and several extended scenes in the film smack of self- indulgence on Roeg's part. Not recommended.
