Burt Lancaster, Craig Wasson, and Marc Singer all turn in top-notch performances in this overlooked war drama set in the early years of the Vietnam War. Measured against films like Apocalypse Now and The Deer Hunter, this earlier film is notable for its stronger credibility, as we follow a young recruit (Wasson), who sees the moral confusion running rampant, and a hard-nosed commander (Lancaster), who refuses to believe that his country is acting in anything but good faith. Highly recommended.
