Based on the novel by Avery Corman, director Robert Benton's 1979 multiple-Oscar winner explores the relationship that develops between Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) and his son Billy (Justin Henry) when wife/mother Joanna (Meryl Streep) suddenly leaves. Although the story is somewhat manipulative, it works overall, because of the focus on the sometimes comic, sometimes dramatic, often touching new adjustments for father and son. Sporting a handsome digital transfer, the disc includes few extras, but boasts an excellent 48 minute "making of" documentary starring Hoffman (who was going through a divorce at the time he was approached for the film), Streep, a grown-up Henry, Corman, and Benton. Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)[Blu-ray Review—Feb. 19, 2009—Sony, 105 min., PG, $28.95—Making its first appearance on Blu-ray, 1979's Kramer vs. Kramer features a nice transfer and a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack. Blu-ray extras include the 48-minute “Finding the Truth” making-of documentary, and the BD Live function. Bottom line: this Best Picture winner makes a welcome debut on Blu-ray.]
