A surprisingly good adaptation of an '80s musical which, in turn, was based on the 1960 Roger Corman quickie about a blood-sucking plant, this impressively mounted 1986 production helmed by Frank Oz features notable turns by stars Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene, as well as a scene-stealing Steve Martin as a sadistic dentist. The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack does brilliant justice to the Howard Ashman/Alan Menken songs, though the picture quality is not quite as pristine. In addition to the commentary by Oz, the extras include production notes, trailers, and an essentially incoherent behind-the-scenes doc that was originally shown at the final wrap cast party. Recommended. (R. Pitman)
