Louisa May Alcott's bittersweet tale of the lives of four sisters in Civil War-era Massachusetts has at least four notable sound-era film incarnations (the others are the 1949 version with June Allyson, the 1978 TV-movie with Meredith Birney Baxter, and the 1994 adaptation starring Winona Ryder), but the 1933 George Cukor-directed film remains the most memorable. Katharine Hepburn walks away with the picture as Jo, the independent sister who rejects an early marriage for a career as a writer. Nominated for Best Picture and director, Little Women nabbed a statue for its effervescent screenplay. Kudos to Warner for giving this more than a lick and a promise: the Dolby Digital mono soundtrack is crisp and clear and the video transfer sparkles. Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
