Although Ole Bornedal's 1998 U.S. remake (starring Ewan McGregor and Nick Nolte) of his 1994 Danish horrifying thriller sank without a trace, the original is now available in a widescreen, Dolby Digital 5.1 sound enhanced version sure to give chiller fans the shivers. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau stars as Martin, a law student who takes a job as a night watchman at a hospital morgue, where he quickly becomes a suspect in a bizarre serial murder case. Stylish, gruesome, and ultimately suspenseful, Nightwatch is somewhat undercut by the general loathsomeness of its characters, including boys-just-want-to-have-fun Martin and his obnoxious best friend Jens (Kim Bodnia). Still, the final half-hour is a genuine corker, making this a strong optional purchase for larger collections. (R. Pitman)
