Written and directed by Darrell Roodt, this powerful South African drama explores the evils of the apartheid system. Segal (James Whylie), a white journalist and Gracie (Gcini Mhlophe), a black pacifist, try to obtain justice when it appears that the murder of a black worker by an oppressive white farmer is going to go unremarked. An effort which becomes an exercise in futility: the white government is corrupt, and black rebels in the hills are planning to murder the white farmer in retribution. Throughout, Gracie clings to the hope that justice without violence can be brought about. Place of Weeping, rather than beat the political drum, delivers its message through sympathetic characters and an intelligent script. Gracie, in particular, emerges as a courageous, selfless woman who retains her humanity in the face of repeated indignities. Highly recommended.
