This boring, and quite unnecessary, remake of the incomparable The Bride of Frankenstein suffers from serious miscasting of the two leads. Jennifer Beals (the bride) presents something of a mystery as an actress: stand-ins do her dance scenes, stand-ins do her nude scenes; if only she had a stand-in to do her acting scenes, we could dispense with Ms. Beals entirely. Sting can act, as long as he's cast in a realistic contemporary role--sci-fi (Dune) and costume drama are simply not his element. One half of The Bride is flat: the Beals/Sting relationship. The other half, which follows the journeys of the spurned Frankenstein monster and an occasionally witty dwarf provides some comic relief. Recommended only for large libraries who will need to meet demand.
