In 1948, American Dream incarnate Preston Tucker built a better mousetrap in the form of his Tucker Torpedo automobile, and then was driven into the ground by Detroit's Big Three. Fortunately, for us, director (and Tucker Torpedo-owner) Francis Ford Coppola brought us the whole sad tale in a surprisingly uplifting '88 film that Paramount now brings to DVD in a THX-mastered anamorphic widescreen transfer that shines like, well, a new Torpedo. With a strong cast that includes Jeff Bridges, Joan Allen and Martin Landau, a toe-tapping period-perfect score by Joe Jackson, and a host of features, including a full-length commentary by Coppola, this fable about the ultimate American believer is a real crowd pleaser. Highly recommended. (S. C. Sickles)
