Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Henry Hathaway's 1944 war drama is less "why we fight" than "how we fight." Set on a U.S. aircraft carrier whose need-for-speed pilots are intentionally grounded as part of a non-combat strategy to fool the Japanese into underestimating American naval strength and trap them at the Battle of Midway, Wing and a Prayer stars Don Ameche as an unyielding, by-the-book commander ("I don't like explanations!" he thunders). While the pilots are the usual war movie stereotypes (there's always got to be someone named Cookie), the actual combat footage is awesome. Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
