Filmed at the 5th North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this year, both of the these programs share the same format and even some of the same sequences. More "infomercial" than documentary, these programs each look at a couple of dozen new cars, while intoning standard sales speak ("the Mustang Mach III features a wraparound rear bumper, open grille, and twin cockpit interior, with a supercharger 4.6 liter 4 valve V-8 engine"). Occasionally one of the two Star Search models, Sandy Flynn and Dawn Stern, slide in or out of, lounge on, and even crawl next to, one of the featured autos. While some of the cars--particularly in the Future Cars video--are interesting to look at (just under 40G, the Porsche Boxter seems like a spiffy little sports car, while the more stately Bentley Brooklyn is slightly out of my piggy bank range at $138,500), most of the new cars shown will be prominently featured in between touchdowns during NFL games on free television this fall. Ergo, there's little point in actually purchasing commercials, especially run-of-the-mill ones. Neither program is recommended. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
