In 1792, a Baptist minister named William Carey set out for India to convert the heathen. He encountered incredible hardships and disappointments, but by the end of his life he had founded Serampore College, helped to abolish the practice of sati, translated the Bible into 6 different languages (and parts of it into 29 others), founded 100 schools for boys and girls, published the first Indian newspaper, introduced the concept of savings banks to Indian farmers, and earned the nickname "Father of the Bengali Renaissance" for publishing Bengali literature. Filmed on location in India, this high quality production tells the moving and inspiring story of Carey's life, and even though the script has a simplistic, overly earnest quality that sometimes afflicts this genre, and the characterizations sometimes lack depth, the film's exceptional content earns it a high recommendation for both religious studies and general collections.
