Can the Holocaust be used as a teaching tool? Can any work of art, music, or theater adequately encompass the enormity of this horror? These are just two questions raised in this documentary, in which two groups of young adults aged 10-18, one from America, the other from Germany, journey to the Auschwitz memorial where they intend to stage a play in their respective languages on the heartbreaking story of Terezin. Terezin was the "model" ghetto the Nazis used to make the world believe that Jews were humanely treated by the Reich. In reality, most inmates, including children, were routinely gassed at death camps once they were no longer 'useful.' Fortunately, many examples of the Terezin children's art and poetry have been preserved as a testament for future generations. We follow the German and American students as they visit the Auschwitz camp, see them rehearsing the play, and listen to the play's author Anna Smulowitz, as well as the teens as they grapple with the timeless issues of collective guilt and responsibility. Finally, we see snippets of the final performance and hear the kids critique the entire experience. While this may help educators and artists reach and teach teens about the Holocaust, for most young people a far superior choice (and one more economical at $19.95) would be The Journey of Butterfly (VL-9/96), a superb and passionate chronicle of the Terezin ghetto.
