Perhaps no other word strikes as much fear into the human heart as “cancer.” Produced by CBS news, this excellent program traces the history of cancer research from the middle of the last century up to the last few years, presenting in easy-to-follow layperson's terms an overview of the dizzying varieties of a disease that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth and fought with a multitude of treatments. When the systematic study of cancer began about 50 years ago, the fact that the disease--which indiscriminately struck men, women and children all over the world--attacked so many discrete systems within the human body made the medical community despair of ever finding a magic bullet solution. But researchers persevered, one deliberate step at a time, and helped create the foundational framework for the advances we enjoy today, including the effectiveness of a simple blood test to spot some cancers, and contemporary treatments such as chemotherapy (accidentally discovered as a positive side-effect of deadly mustard gas), radiation, bone marrow transplants, interferon/recombinant DNA, and other therapies. Although three years old, this overview of cancer and its treatments would still be an invaluable resource for people struggling with the disease, as well as an excellent primer for general viewers. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: P. (C. Block)
