Naturalist Michael Ellis takes viewers on a beautiful journey along Alaska's southeast coast, looking at a wide array of flora and fauna, ranging from the little banana slug in the forest to the majestic humpback whale that cavorts in the ocean. A fascinating ecosystem, the southeast coast of Alaska boasts the world's largest temperate rainforest as well as some of the largest glaciers on the continent. Viewers will see grizzly bears, eagles, the massive northern sea lions, and even some rather active geoducks, quaintly referred to as "pissers" by the locals because of their propensity to jet forth streams of fluid when poked. In addition to a trip to the ice caves near Glacier Bay, the program also includes an update on the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound. A pleasant journey for armchair travelers and nature buffs alike, Alaska's Whales & Wildlife, which has also been seen on The Discovery Channel, is recommended.
