Lorne Greene narrates this engaging portrait of pioneer conservationist Aldo Leopold. After tracing Leopold's early history- as a student at Yale, and then as a Forest Assistant in Arizona and New Mexico, before taking a teaching post at the University of Wisconsin-the program combines visual footage with overlaid narration from Leopold's classic ecological treatise A Sand County Almanac. Running from January through December, Leopold's commentary ranges from the history that is embodied in a "good oak" to a beautiful description of the way the river "paints" the landscape in August. This is a good program, not only as an interesting biographical piece, but also as a nice reminder about the importance of what Leopold called "the land ethic"-an ethic, which, for the future of the human race, is as necessary as any other. In addition, the video may spur patrons to dip into the book, which being much longer, is also much richer. Recommended. (Available from: Aylmer Press, P.O. Box 2735, Madison, WI 53701.)
