The history of Ancient Rome reads like a royal soap opera. To kick things off, ya got your basic mythical fratricide (Romulus and Remus), followed by an oppressive monarchy (the Etruscans), culminating in the glorious establishment of a republic. And all of that was even before Cleopatra rolled herself up in a carpet. While the first episode we watched in this 4-video boxed set ostensibly focuses on the republic, it does include the descent from the grandeur that was the Roman Republic into the dictatorship which ushered in the early empire (and thus, the republic's end), spending plenty of time on Cleo, Julius Caesar and Marc Antony. Pertinent interviews with scholars from around the world are interwoven with shots of artifacts, paintings, even clips of old Hollywood movies (unfortunately), and nicely done re-enactments. Visually interesting and historically sound, this set is highly recommended. Aud: J, H, C, P. (R. Reagan)
