Documentary filmmaker Louise Hogarth, whose work (including 2003's The Gift) focuses on prominent social and human-rights issues, here examines the effects of H.I.V./AIDS on the population of South Africa in the often heart-rending Angels in the Dust. The film follows Marion Cloete, a privileged woman who abandons a comfortable lifestyle in Johannesburg to establish a self-contained village (including a school) to minister to the needs of over 500 children orphaned by the disease. Hogarth, who also pays tribute to the good work of charitable organizations and advocacy groups working for change in the region, makes a necessary plea for increased worldwide governmental involvement, but her film never loses sight of the intimate, interpersonal side of the story featuring Cloete and the children. DVD extras include an audio commentary by Hogarth, deleted scenes, and relevant PSAs. Winner of a Special Jury Prize at the 2007 Seattle International Film Festival, this is recommended. Aud: C, P.
