"Any woman worth her salt had bedding." So saith one of the interviewees in this interesting look at women for whom quilting is not just a hobby, but more like a moral imperative. Mable Otis Head, Loyce Wood Sage, and Addie Stevens Jewett, among others, are the veteran quiltmakers from the southwest who share their anecdotes (and quilts). One recalls the cotton crop of '31, when a total of seven bales were garnered from 360 acres of land; another remembers the quilt she gave her son and his bride ("If they stay married five years, they get another quilt."); yet another can point out which pieces of an old quilt were store-bought, and which ones came from clothes on hand. In one of the women's "old fogey opinion", "the world's changed too much." These are warm and winning stories from a world that's long gone...and missed. Recommended for larger public libraries.
