Ancient civilizations around the world spun legends about a mysterious culture that suddenly vanished. The people were supposed to have mastered flight and electricity among other things, and there is evidence throughout the world that they traveled extensively and shared their knowledge. Underwater explorations in the modern age have uncovered tantalizing possible remnants of this vanished civilization in places as varied as Antarctica, the Caribbean, and Africa. The name of this mysterious ‘lost continent' is, of course, Atlantis. Host Richard Crenna takes viewers on a global and historical tour investigating claims concerning Atlantis, from predictions by Edgar Cayce (who thought it was in the area of the islands of Bimini) to more scientific statements linking Atlantis to the present-day Azores. Part of the three volume Questar series entitled Incredible Mysteries Of Our Planet, the program's cinematography is outstanding, the challenges to the intellect are stimulating, and the historical background is, for the most part, well documented (except for a few foolish lapses in accuracy: the ruins of Angkor Wat are in Cambodia, not Thailand; showing a picture of Machu Picchu while discussing other cultures that may have been influenced by Atlantis beggars the fact that this Incan refuge was constructed in the 1550's). Sure to be popular, this is recommended, with reservations. The other two titles in the series are: Chariots of the Gods and Bermuda Triangle. Aud: H, P. (J. Carlson)
