We're totally doomed. Of course, American Idol had already made that pretty clear, but this truly frightening slab of “entertainment” by the young British trio Atomic Kitten seals the deal. Harmless, you say? Just another of the innocuous puff pastries that pop music has been serving up seemingly since time immemorial? Sure, they have the bare midriffs, the generic Mariah-Britney-Shakira (sort of) blonde manes, the tight bods, and air-filled heads typical of the genre…but they're Brits, so they must have some class, right? Yeah, sure, and so did the Spice Girls. Still, you argue, if young girls have the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, et al. to scream over, why shouldn't there be a distaff version? Problem is, the aforementioned boy toyz at least manage to evidence a little talent and craft. The “sound” of Atomic Kitten (the very name is cringe-inducing), by contrast, is so manufactured, so vapid and creepy, it makes Bananarama sound like Billie Holiday in comparison. Their covers of the Bangles (“Eternal Flame”), Blondie (“The Tide is High,” which exchanges Debbie Harry's casual sexiness for clueless hip-hop horror), Britain's own Kim Wilde (“Kids in America”), and Martha Reeves (a perfunctory “Dancing in the Street”) on this 17-song DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound-backed set don't help a bit; nor does a “fly-on-the-wall” documentary entitled “The Kitten Diaries,”' which shows them preparing for this Belfast concert. What's more… oh, forget it. This rant is over. I'm gonna go put on some good music--Celine Dion, anyone? Not recommended. Aud: P. (S. Graham)
