Black. Feminist. Lesbian. Activist. Poet. YA Librarian. Audre Lorde (1934-1992) wore many hats over the five decades in which she wrote, taught, marched, and lobbied. Quiet & Unassuming wasn't one of them. As a child, Lorde's sisters were counseled by the nuns to inform their parents not to "put so many heavy clothes" on Audre, since she couldn't feel the numerous reprimands. From her trials with Catholic sisters in NYC's Harlem as a child to her battles against racism, sexism and homophobia in her life and her art, this luminous biography by Ada Gay Griffith and Michelle Parkerson mixes delightful anecdotes (many told by Lorde herself), archival footage, and readings to create a well-rounded portrait of the artist. Although Lorde lost her final battle--against breast cancer--she went into that good night with courage, dignity, and--to the last--with a poem on her lips. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Pitman)
