Since the Vietnam war, Bangkok and other Thai cities have experienced a population explosion. This video studies the new urban economy of Thailand, and its implications for the survival of the traditional Thai village. Part of the "Women's Human Rights" series, the video notes the importance of women to the Thai economy, and explores measures being taken to encourage women to stay in or return to the villages. Topics covered include the role of rural cooperatives, health care, day care, family planning, and the government's role in supporting small scale ventures such as a blanket factory which provides a decent wage to village women. A particularly vexing problem is Thailand's booming sex industry, which draws many underage women to the cities for prostitution, creating additional problems such as increased AIDS cases. Officials are interviewed and discuss efforts to end this exploitation by changing traditional male attitudes. Well shot and edited, this program would hold more interest for government policy planners than average viewers. An optional purchase. Aud: C, P. (S. Rees)
