Italian cinema? It's the greatest. Just ask any Italian. Taking Visconti's early masterpiece (Bellissima) for its title, this rapid-fire tour of the past 40 years of Italian cinema serves up delightful bits from some of the greatest films of all time, including The Bicycle Thief, 8 1/2, and L' Avventura. Interspersed throughout are interviews with Fellini, Bertolucci, Wertmuller, the Taviani brothers, and modern horror master, Dario Argente, among many others. And all of the major Italian stars are represented: Mastroianni, Sophia Loren, Giancarlo Giannini, etc. English narration is combined with subtitles, some of which are unfortunately unreadable. This caveat aside, Bellissimo is an excellent montage of the sights and sounds of Italian cinema. Recommended.
