The fifth installment in the Bicycling Through History series (see review of the fourth entry, Revolutionary Period: Delaware Valley-Philadelphia, in VL-7/04) takes the viewer across the Appalachians on the popular Virginia Creeper Trail, as we follow cyclist Vickie to the Daniel Boone Homestead, Black's Fort and other Kentucky military compounds, the ground on which the Battle of Blue Licks was fought, and various Revolutionary War landmarks. Featuring interviews with locals, re-enactment participants, and "living village” period actors, who provide historical and cultural insights, production-wise this series gets better with each installment. It's difficult at best to maintain a smooth picture while following a bicycle down a bumpy path, but producer Robert Weber does an admirable job. Sure to be popular with cycling, travel, and history enthusiasts, this is recommended. Aud: P. (L. Stevens)
