E. G. Marshall narrates this gripping National Geographic Special on volcanoes and earthquakes. Traveling from Iceland to Africa to California to Japan and ending in Greece, noted geologist Dr. Robert Ballard examines the past, present, and future of these awesome geologic events. In Iceland, an area untouched by volcanic activity in 200 years is suddenly seeing seismic activity which could destroy a 60 million dollar geothermal power station nearby. In Eastern Africa, a rift in the rock bed is steadily sending the waters from the Gulf of Adan into the heartland of Africa. And in California, experts are predicting that the next big quake is going to wreak incredible amounts of damage on Los Angeles--probably during our lifetimes. Although the film was shot in 1983, the validity of its statements have not dated. The July 1986 cover story of Discover magazine, for instance, is about the upcoming L.A. quake. Highly recommended.
